There are a number of ways that systems, designed to quantify reading ability for the needs of administrators and politicians, discourage and even prevent children from reading. Many teachers hate this but some haven't figured out how to get around it. There are many ways to discourage reading based on scores and systems that were created to reduce learning and reading to a series of numbers that administrators and politicians can use to evaluate and "hold teachers accountable" . Snowball, many, many teachers agree with you, but some haven't figured out how to buck the system.Suzanne Morgan Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02877924278547537035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34163212.post-76113232516812815272013-12-01T14:01:12.168-06:002013-12-01T14:01:12.168-06:00I work as a tutor in several districts, and it is ...I work as a tutor in several districts, and it is so sad to watch kids shut down and stop reading altogether because of the frustration of finding something they want to read in the level they have to read. It is self defeating and makes me angry, but I'm on the outside and teachers don't want to hear it from me.Snowballhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02638506554534468064noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34163212.post-33209625153084469022013-10-06T00:50:24.948-05:002013-10-06T00:50:24.948-05:00I'm sure its not a majority of teachers, but d...I'm sure its not a majority of teachers, but definitely one or two around here. It seems very heartless not to work with a child to make an assignment fit.Melissa Wardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04761668159421575198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34163212.post-51473612894419896542013-10-05T23:00:41.165-05:002013-10-05T23:00:41.165-05:00What. Just... what?
I don't care about tests ...What. Just... what?

I don't care about tests and scores and modern evaluations, in what world does a teacher assess whether or not a child has fulfilled some requirement to read a book based on a computerized number and refuse to accept books slightly (or even less-slightly) out of that range? What a terrible way to educate children and what an awful way to get kids to love and appreciate reading. I'm honestly speechless right now.Meytal Radzinskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15805413335735169073noreply@blogger.com
